BJP’s Sunder Singh wins MCD standing committee seat, 0 votes for AAP candidate

After a high-drama voting process, the last vacant seat of the Delhi MCD Standing Committee was won by BJP candidate Sunder Singh. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader won the seat after securing 115 votes, while AAP candidate Nirmala Kumari secured zero votes during the polls.
The standing committee is the highest decision-making body of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. With this poll result, the BJP now has 10 members in the panel while the ruling AAP has only eight.
The elections for the last seat of the MCD standing committee were held when the post fell vacant after BJP councillor Kamaljeet Sehrawat was elected as the Lok Sabha MP from West Delhi in the general elections earlier this year.
This was the first time that the election was held without the participation of AAP and Congress councillors.
The elections for the lone vacancy in the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were held today after strong objections by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The polling was held in the presence of Additional Commissioner Jitendra Yadav, who was made the Presiding Officer in the absence of the Mayor and Deputy mayor.
Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi had directed the MCD Commissioner to proceed with the election for the sixth member of the Standing Committee on 5th October. AAP refused to participate in the election.
Earlier, the Mayor expressed her concern regarding the election process, saying that the order issued to hold the polls at 1 pm today is illegal and unconstitutional. She further said that the Delhi LG should not have the power to interfere in the functioning of the House.
Expressing her objection, Oberoi said, “Following this, I was forced to adjourn the House till 5th October. Legally the election can be held only on October 5. A letter has been sent to the MCD Commissioner and it has been told to him that the notice issued yesterday is illegal. What are the BJP’s intentions that it wants to conduct the election this way.”
